EVALUATION QUESTION 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

The first piratical task we were set was our preliminary task and this introduced us to the equipment and programs that we will use in the future.
The preliminary task consisted of us filming a man walking down a corridor opening a door and sitting down. then a small piece of dialogue is exchanged between two actors, this lasted around 35 seconds.
In this short clip we learnt the rules of match on action and the 180° rule, these are essential for any clip to make sense and to reduce the chances of contranouity mistakes.

Match on action: this is when two shots in the same period of time is simultaneous with no difference E.G. someone picks up a book with their right hand in one shot. then in another shot in the same time period they are picking it up with there left. this is a failure to use match on action. For our small clip we had to match the hand reaching to the handle, the opening of the door and sitting down on a chair. This rule was also used in our 2 minuet film opening, when the Press conference scene faded to the TV in the window, when two men meet and the sniper watching from a distance, and the zoom from the two men's position to a fade of the snipers barrel.

180° rule is usually used when two people are talking and the camera switches to one actor to the other. This must be done within certain boundaries. Imagine there is an imaginary line cutting through the two actors (180°) the cameras can not cross this line or it will cause confusion and make it look as if the two actors are not facing each other. The 180° rule was also used in the short clip when the two actors exchange dialogue. However this rule can be broken E.G. If the shot is an arching shot (this is when the camera moves in one circular motion around one fixed point) around two actors addressing each other there is only one camera used in this shot so the viewer has the impression of moving around the actors rather than watching faces. This was used in our 2 minuet film clip when two unknown men exchange a phone.

The research planning was relatively short due to the lack of time. However we did plan on what corridor and room we would use and who would act for the clip. We also planned on where we would position the cameras.  for our film opening we planned our locations, our actors, storyboards, our lighting, positioning of actor and equipment and sound preparations were made.

The editing and construction of the clips where quite similar due to using the same software and equipment. However we had made some audio and start credits (WKL Pro.) for these we had used Audio Audition  and Particle Illusion.

Our evaluations were very different between the preliminary and the film opening. for our preliminary we just typed up what happened and what we thought of it on our blogs, but for our film opening we have to answer & questions in detail, this is good because nothing is missed and we know what we have done and learnt.

EVALUATION QUESTION 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The technologies I used in the planning process of planning and research was mostly the internet. on the internet I used Google, Wikipedia, YouTube and other peoples blogs. everything that was searched on the internet we used the schools Apple MACs. this had its good and bad points. the good point where they  weren't connected to the schools I.T technical supervises we were able to research what we wanted without any site being banned! However because they weren't on the school system we could only access the work from one MAC which was an irritation.
In the construction I used Premier pro, Audio Audition and Particle Illusion. these were used to edit, construct and produce the film opening. for the filming we used the school cameras, tripods, sound equipment including boom pole, our own lighting, our own camera to take pictures of the filming and our own props.
For the Evaluation I have used other peoples blogs, Google, these were used to find other peoples opinions on each question.
Using these programs for editing I have learnt how to use each of them and how to edit filming.
I was the camera man and i learned how to pan, zoom, track, use a dolly and sometimes the sound equipment.
I hadn't used blogger before media, but I didn't find it that hard to get used to except a few technical hitches.
I have learnt over time a lot about all of these programs and equipment on how they work to how to use them, I have learnt as much as I need to know for now.

EVALUATION QUESTION 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

WE showed our 2 minuet film opening to an audience member to find out their reaction to the different themes of action/thriller/mystery. our audience member was:

Name: Jordan Chilvers
Age: 17
Background: Jordan does not study Media studies so he is a non bias audience, with this we can find out the true reaction of a random audience member.
General interests: Jordans interests consist of sport and he enjoys to watch action films. with this in mind Jordan is a good member of the public to watch our 2 minuet opening
Audience's reaction: Jordan's overall reaction to our 2 minute opening was that he wanted to see more, he enjoyed the action part of the film and the editing. This tells use what we want to hear, because we have created enigma, suspense, and kept our target audience hooked for more.

This was against what our original research told us. The statistics of the BBFC told us that older woman would like this film. However our audience member was a young male teenager who said they enjoyed it.

EVALUATION QUESTION 4: Who would be the audience for media product.

With our genre being a mix of Action/mystery our target audience vary's.
The Action audience are mostly male over the age of 35 in the social class of C2/DE.
The mystery audience is more to women and C2/C1 class. (these statistics are from the BBFC)
Therefore this makes our film have a wide target audience.
I chose this genre because of my group being diverse in genre preferences.
This was a way we could include all our genres.
We have given our film a rating of 15+ due to the violence and dark scene.
our Film would be shown to in a independent cinema due to the target audience being small.
This is one of our audience members

EVALUATION QUESTION 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

what is a film distributor?
A film distributor is a company that gets a film into cinemas, onto DVDs/BluRays, onto I Tunes, etc. They also decide when and where the film will be shown once it reaches TV.
our film will need a smaller more independent distributor this is because we cannot afford a major distributor.
We would properly use  jerry bruckheimer films, or any other film distributor that is smaller but still well known.
Smaller film distributors have become successful before in the past like Film 4 with Four Lions. According to the Official Top 10 UK Film Chart (7–9 May 2010), Four Lions was placed at sixth. This is a big achievement for a small film distributor.
Our film would be shown in independent art house cinemas due to the target audience being relatively small.
We would want to use YouTube and possibly Google homepage to try and widen the chances of people watching it. We need to make it large spread due to the target audience being small.
A small distributor that specialises in action is: kaleidoscope film distribution. They are claiming to be a rising film distributor that does works in Action films.

The other logo was too static.

EVALUATION QUESTION 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My group that I work with consists of 3 people including me, all with different attitudes to what type of film we prefer.
Kane Guichard who prefers: comedy/action
Willaim Davidson who prefers: war
and me Lewis Pickering who prefers: pycological thrillers and action.
this was not much of a problem because we all agreed to add all of these themes into our film and this is shown in our clip. Action is showed by using the sniper. The pycological thriller was used in the case of the two men walking in the street, making you think who are they. We also added Kane's preference of Action with the sniping scene this also worked for Will's genre of war.
We are all male in our group including the actors, this is playing up to the stereo type of the killer being male. The suspicious males meeting on a dark street are also male. however when the 'chief of police' is talking about the previous murders he tells the viewer that a woman has been killed. this possibly suggest that the woman was an easy target. Our age is also a factor to the development of our film. I am the oldest at 17 and Kane Guichard is the youngest at 16. there isn't much of an age gap between us, so we didn't really have clashing thoughts due to age.

New logo

Our new logo to replace the old one. We did this because of the secret production we thought wasn't up to scratch and didn't work with the quality of the rest of the film.

EVALUATION - Question 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

(we have had problems in finding films within the same genre so the Sherlock BBC series is used purely for demonstration purposes). Conventions of our genre, detective/crime:
  1. Murder
  2. Police
  3. Chalk out line of dead body.
  4. Tense music/suspense
  5. Night scenes
Conventions we have used in our film that are in others,
we tried to integrate the titles to the film.
we also filmed the scenes at night to keep to most conventions.
we also kept enigma all the way through the 2 minuets.

The editing;
The editing contain fast cuts and tense atmospheric music.
in our film we have added faster cuts when the sniper is seen and tense music to create the correct suspense.
sound;
In Sherlock (BBC)

In our film we used tense music to create suspense. So we used this convention.

mise -en-scene;
C:  Long shady clothing, made so not much is revealed about some characters to create enigma.
L: Dark night lighting to reveal as little as possible.
A: The actors do not speak much so we didn't have any mishaps with wording. The only dialogue was the (chief of police) at the beginning to tell the viewer what has happened so far.
M: No make up to keep as much gritty feel as possible.
P: We used a sniper as a main prop so the genre of action is confirmed within the first two minuets.
S: The setting is a dark back ally with little lighting and a dark warehouse. this is to give the viewer a feeling of becoming tense.
props;
-sniper
In Shooter

In our film:
Character:
the only main character seen in our 2 minuets is the antagonist (the sniper)
costumes:
-Long coats;
In Sherlock (BBC)
In our film long coats were used so we used this convention

locations:
streets night:
Sherlock (BBC)
In our film we also used night/street scenes.

camera shots fast tempo in places in the TV series Sherlock (BBC)

In our film we also added fast cuts when the action was introduced.

feedback from the rest of the class

we had feedback of our film so far and we noted down what needed to be improved.

  • Too many Transitions (this is making the whole shot fade in and out when not wanted).
  • Cut shots (it was said that some shots were too long and needed to be cut so it made more sense).
  • Sound clean up (the sound in some places needed cleaning up E.G background noise and speech).
To address these issues we have changed some transitions and made a new sequence of cut up shots so it makes sense. we are also needing to do some detailed sound editing to make it sound as clear as it is needed to be.

Problems

When we finished filming and have roughly edited the film we have realised we do not fill the 2 minuets required. To stop this I have had an idea of there being a phone call to the police of a panicked woman reporting shootings. This should then cover the time required.

filming the night scenes

setting up the lighting

Thursday, 5 January 2012

This is us filming the scene where the press scene fades to an outdoor shot of a TV in a window showing the news when a man walks by and (6 hours later) follows behind him into the night scene in the street.
